Thomas H. Snelson, Jr., 89, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016. He was born March 26, 1927 in Garfield, New Jersey, the son of Thomas and Jean Snelson. In 1930 the family moved to Norwalk, Connecticut where he attended local schools. In 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy. After the service, he attended the University of Vermont, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor's degree in commerce and economics. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and was the winner of the 1950 University of Vermont Winter Carnival Kake Walk. In 1950 he married Shirley Jane Crocker to whom he was married for 63 years. Upon his graduation, they moved to Montreal, Canada when Tom had a position with Alcan Aluminum Limited and lived there for 10 years. During this period three of their four children were born- daughters, Anne and Janet and a son, Rob. In 1961a transfer to New York brought them back to Norwalk, Connecticut where their fourth child, Kim, was born. In 1963, another transfer brought them to Cleveland and Warren, Ohio. Tom retired from Alcan in 1985 as Vice President of Advertising and Public Relations after 34 years of service. In 1986 he started his own public relations firm, THS, Inc., which he closed in 2006 after 20 successful years. During his business career he traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia and became very familiar with a number of countries, their history and culture. He shared this experience with a number of friends by organizing trips. The group became known as the FOTs (Friends of Tom). He was a member and past president of the Montreal Chapter of the Industrial Advertisers Association, a member of Meeting Planners International and the recipient of a number of advertising and public relations awards in both Canada and the United States, and a board member of Habitat for Humanity in Trumbull County. One of his passions was the building of a summer home on the family island in Millsite Lake in Upstate New York. He was also president of the Millsite Lake Property Owners Association for a number of years. He found time to be active in Boy Scouts, serving as Cub Master, Scout Master, and District Chairman for Northeast Ohio, and was awarded Scouting's Good Turn Award. In 2014 he was chosen to place a wreath on the The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on behalf of a WWII Veteran group that had been selected for an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He was a member of The First Congregational Church on the Green in Norwalk, Conn., serving on the Finance and Trustee Committees. He was currently a member of the Howland Community Church and had served as chairman of the Trustees and the Congregation. Tom is survived by his daughters, Anne (Ronald) Frattare, Janet (Stephen) Sweet; son, Rob (Kristy) Snelson; grandchildren, Alison (Joshua) Bartlett, Lindsey (Weston) Davis, Matthew, Katherine and Joshua Snelson and Taylor Sweet; great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Kate, Samuel and Grace Bartlett and Albian Davis. He was preceded in passing by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Kim; mother and father; and two sisters, Jean and Charlotte. A memorial service will be held at Howland Community Church, 198 Niles Cortland Rd. SE, Warren on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 10:00AM.
