Wendell D. King, 77, passed away at Heritage Manor on June 8, 2018. Wendell was born the oldest of three children in Flat Run, WV on November 2, 1940 to Jesse & Ethel (Mayfield) King. He was a resident of Cortland for over 40 years, before he moved to Youngstown. On December 12, 1965 he was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth Ann Carpenter who preceded in him death on June 14, 2012. Wendell proudly served his country in the US Navy. During his service he was stationed on the USS Walworth County (LST-1164) and was involved with various maneuvers along with the standoff situation in the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his discharge, Wendell spent his career working for Packard Electric as an Artos cutter making wiring harnesses for General Motors. In the 1970’s he enjoyed being a member of the Buckeye Van Association. He had a deep appreciation for customized cars, especially hotrods and his photos and short articles were published in several car magazines. He loved traveling, fishing, grilling out and the art of photography. Most importantly, Wendell was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Visitation for Wendell will be held on Monday June 11th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday June 12th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Lane Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel, Cortland, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday June 12th at 12:00 p.m. Wendell is survived by his children Holly (Jeff) Swartz, Kelly (Mike Boggia) King-Boggia and Kristal (Brian) Tarkenton; his grandchildren: Jessica & Jared Swartz and Branson & Sierra Boggia; his sister Gwendolyn (Steve) Konya as well as many other relatives. Besides his wife, Wendell was preceded in death by his parents and brother Weldon King. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heritage Manor Nursing Home for their exceptional care of military veterans.
